The Contemporary Dayton presents The 30th Open Members’ Show. The Co’s popular biennial exhibition—back for the first time since 2020— is a community-wide celebration of 112 local and Ohio-based artists.
Artist Prizes include: The John Lombard Prize Best in Show; The Mike Goheen Memorial Award for Emerging Photographers; and The 2024 Members Showcard Award.
Shon Walters: The Hole Belly

The Contemporary Dayton presents an ambitious exhibition of new work, created to fill the entirety of the Co’s four galleries and three and a half years in the making. The Hole Belly is a fusion of nature and craftsmanship from a visionary sculptor renowned for his mastery in transforming found and sourced wood into awe-inspiring sculpture.
Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca: Swinguerra

The Contemporary Dayton presents Swinguerra, a film by Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca that premiered 2019 Venice Biennale. Collaborating since 2011, Wagner and de Burca create works in video, photography, and installation that explore contemporary histories of underground dance and musical genres. Swinguerra focuses on disadvantaged queer communities of color in Recife, Brazil, with an emphasis on transgender and non-binary performers.
vanessa german with Sandra Keat German (1948-2014): THE BLUE MOTHER

The Contemporary Dayton presents THE BLUE MOTHER, an installation of sculptural works by artist and activist vanessa german that celebrate the human form as a vessel of power and change. A visual storyteller, german utilizes assemblage and mixed media, combining locally found objects to build protective ritualistic structures known as her power figures or tar babies. Modeled on Congolese Nkisi sculptures and drawing on folk art practices, they are embellished with materials including beading, glass, fabric, and sculpted wood, and come into existence at the axis on which Black power, spirituality, mysticism, and feminism converge.
Arturo Herrera: Between

The Contemporary Dayton is proud to present Between, an environment comprised of recent works and a site-specific double wall mural by globally renowned Venezuelan artist Arturo Herrera. Melding abstraction, collage, art historical and pop culture imagery, Herrera has produced an innovative vocabulary using modernist strategies of fragmentation, re-composition, repetition and composed and gestural mark making. His recent mixed media works straddle painting, sculpture and installation, extending into the gallery spaces via two large, colorful, writhing murals that were designed specifically for The Co’s architecture.
Tyler Macko: A voice from I don’t know where

The Contemporary Dayton presents A voice from I don’t know where, new work by Tyler Macko. This series of new paintings speaks to an entanglement of prescribed American history with the more felt, ongoing experience of family and place. Macko’s practice pulls from the histories of collage and assemblage. They are constructed from found objects, many with personal references to growing up in Dayton OH, and his familial history. Decorative rugs, Raggedy Ann dolls, berry pies, maps and decorative needlepoint textiles find themselves among the focal points in the topography Macko’s works. Pressing against elements are materials like yarn, textiles and rope that are hand-worked into the teeming visage of the paintings. These materials and iconography explore a specific Midwestern cultural history; one in which the artist grew up and remains surrounded by.
Kevin Jerome Everson: films

The Contemporary Dayton is honored to present a selection of films by Mansfield, Ohio born, and internationally acclaimed artist Kevin Jerome Everson. One of the primary cinematic visionaries of our time, Everson’s filmic work evades every label: non-narrative, experimental, avant-garde, found footage, Black, documentary and certainly “realism”. Everson’s vision of film routs settled notions of the natural and the real. To properly understand his particular brand of cinema, the viewer must rethink what they “know” about the “reality” of his filmed Black subjects; their work or their joy or the lives that they lead when not being filmed. Directing his lens at the lives of Black Americans, Everson’s films play with the omnipresent yet invisible histories packed into signifiers like “body,” “Blackness,” “knowledge,” “time,” and “process”, allowing him to create poetic narratives of family, work, struggle and celebration. Acknowledging this, the film scholar and companion of the artist, Greg de Cuir, Jr., describes Everson’s work as driven by “the concern to record everyday Black experience.”
Yael Bartana: The Undertaker

The Undertaker chronicles an enigmatic leader and her armed followers during a choreographed procession and burial of weapons. Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love and birthplace of American democracy, plays a prominent role as this group of dancers, war veterans, and activists from a variety of local communities moves across the city’s charged historical landscape. Their procession and slow, deliberate gestures are grounded in the movements of renowned Israeli choreographer Noa Eshkol (1924– 2007), particularly her 1953 ceremonial performance in remembrance of the Holocaust.
Carmen Winant:
The neighbor, the friend, the lover

Carmen Winant is a writer and visual artist who explores representations of women through collage, mixed media and installation. While her practice is often couched in the realm of photography, it is decidedly different than most photographic practices in that she collects images so that they can be entered into an index of sorts. The index is determined by the nature, context and ideas of the project for which they are being considered. Winant’s way of working, along with utilizing installation and collage strategies to examine feminist modes of survival and revolt, also begins to question the very nature of photography; what it is now and toward what it might be evolving.

“Suss’ paintings attend to the genealogy of caretaking and the everyday shapes that care takes: ordinary fabrics, simple language, routine.” – Sarah Blackwood, The New YorkerBecky Suss: Home gathers together a series of paintings from the past six years of Suss’ career. The works come from different stages and projects but together they amount to a holistic investigation into the artist’s remarkably focused depictions of personal, domestic, intimate, and imagined spaces.
Waking Up: The Biennial Members and Student Invitational

A new body of work by Dayton-based photographer, Amy Lynn Powell. What once grew straight… is made up of hundreds of images the artist selected from social media that were tagged “Dayton, OH,” which she then printed and arranged specifically for the exhibition.
James Nares: STREET
September 16–December 24, 2022
STREET is a 61-minute video of New York City’s streets and its people that has been edited from sixteen hours of continuous footage and then greatly slowed down. A love letter to Nares’ adoptive home, the film slows the clamor of the city to a hypnotic effect.
Nina Chanel Abney

At the forefront of a generation of artists that are unapologetically revitalizing traditional narrative figurative painting through the lens of contemporary life, New Jersey-based painter, Nina Chanel Abney, draws on animated cartoons, video games, hip-hop culture, celebrity websites, and tabloid magazines to create large-scale paintings and collages that are scathing commentaries on social attitudes and inequities.
Mychaelyn Michalec: From A Basement On A Hill

The premiere of a new body of work by Dayton-based artist, Mychaelyn Michalec, consisting of embroidered “drawings” and deeply textured tufted rug “paintings” that conflate issues of craft and cultural value.
Sara Cwynar: Soft Film

Combining elements of composite photography and experimental film and performance video, Brooklyn-based artist, Sara Cwynar, is interested in how objects circulate via the Internet, entering and exiting various lives.
Willis “Bing” Davis: Kneel
November 5, 2021–January 14, 2022
Featuring a room-sized installation that explores police brutality through “kneelers” created with reclaimed wood sculptures. In the tradition of African Folk Art prayer, the kneelers metaphorically connect Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling protests and the fatal action in the murder of George Floyd.
Samuel Levi Jones: The Empire is Falling

Jones’ paintings are comprised of the rended covers of books whose purpose is to influence, educate, and inform. In his effort to investigate omissions and falsehoods deeply embedded within these volumes, Jones sews the book covers back together to create uncannily beautiful abstract paintings, often at a large scale.
Tuan Andrew Nguyen: The Boat People

Extracting and re-working narratives via history and supernaturalism is an essential part of Nguyen’s video works and sculptures where fact and fiction are both held accountable. Set in an unspecified future at the precarious edge of humanity’s possible extinction, The Boat People follows a group of children led by a strong-willed and resourceful little girl, who travel the seas and collect stories of a world they never knew through objects that survived through time.
Heather Jones: Storytellers

Steeped in the history of quilt making and a vast group of anonymous or under-recognized female makers over a vast swath of time, Dayton-based artist Heather Jones’ work is unequivocally feminist.
Odili Donald Odita: 3 Steps From Center
February 3–April 16, 2022
For Odita, color in itself has the possibility of mirroring the complexity of the world as much as it has the potential for being distinct. In his paintings and murals, he thinks of his colors as agents to express thoughts, ideas, place, time, and transformational change. Much of his color selection is based on personal memories and created intuitively by hand-mixing so that no two shades are ever repeated.
Jeffrey Gibson: To Feel Myself Beloved on the Earth

Within a soundscape of polyrhythmic drumming and ambient noises, the dancers transition between meditative breathing and un-choreographed movement to express the oscillating relationship between inner turmoil and harmony. Turning to breathing, physical movement, and nature to explore themes of identity, Gibson seeks to transform chaos to stability and healing through movement.
Beverly Fishman: CURE

Fishman imbues her glossy, exuberant pieces with the hidden implication of what lurks beneath the façade of pharmaceutical culture: the manipulative effect of color on the psyche and the penchant of these colors to mark mental connections between consumer and drug.
George Rush: Assisted Living

Rush, who has spent years painting the boundary between inside and outside, continues this exploration with paintings derived from cell phone photographs made during walks through his neighborhood, drives through Columbus, Ohio—the city in which he lives—and candid moments from work and home life.
Mary Reid Kelley & Patrick Kelley: Night Kitchen

New works by painter-filmmaker partners, Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley, centered around their film, I’m Jackson Pollock. This installation also includes their sculptural, multimedia works that explore the mechanics of power and its fallibility.
Nari Ward: We the People
September 11 – November 30, 2020
A 60-foot-wide wall installation, which consists of thousands of shoelaces that hang fringe-like from the gallery wall, Ward recreates the words that start the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, replicating the font and style of the Constitution’s main scribe, Timothy Matlack. Additionally, The Co will collaborate with the League of Women Voters in the Greater Dayton Area, by turning the gallery into a voter registration center and delivering every newly registered voter’s documents to the Montgomery County Board of Elections on a daily basis. Registration will include the ability to receive mail-in ballots.

Zachary Armstrong will present an exhibition using newly designed wallpaper, large paintings, prints, and other elements, transforming the gallery into a massive collage in black, white, and gray using lines, grids, found and created images.
Curtis Barnes, Sr.: Love & Peace

Curators Zachary Armstrong and Michael Goodson, working with Curtis Barnes Sr.’s family, quite literally pulled these paintings from a dark storage room off of far West Salem Ave. Though some of the paintings need restoration and cleaning, these works immediately sprung to life as they came into the light.
Cauleen Smith: Remote Viewing

Globally recognized filmmaker, artist, and teacher, Cauleen Smith, and her video Remote Viewing uncovers a true story about a boy who watched the whites in his town attempt to obliterate every trace of the black community’s history by digging a deep hole in which to bury a historical schoolhouse built for the education of black students.
Remote Viewing’s title simultaneously refers to the inaccessibility of Land Art’s iconic works, mostly experienced at a distance through photo documentation, and to how this remove mirrors the detachment evident in our acceptance of systemic social violence accessed via the blithe click of a TV remote control.

The 25 artists-—some of who were well-established from The Contemporary Dayton’s beginning and others who have since gained significant artistic reputations—came together this Summer to create new works in pairs or groups resulting in this groundbreaking exhibition.
