Renowned Local Artist Premiers New Work at Dayton Visual Arts Center: Katherine Kadish unveils new, stunning paintings and monotypes

DAYTON (November 14, 2016) – Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) is pleased to present Inside Out, Outside In: New Works by Katherine Kadish, opening November 19th and running through December 24th . This exhibition comes at a pivotal time in the artist’s career with Kadish recently completing large-scale commissions at the Dayton Metro Library Northwest Branch and the Kettering Government Center, and having recently received a nomination for the 2017 Governor’s Award for the Arts.

This new series of paintings and monotypes by the internationally renowned artist is presented in an evocative installation conjuring passageways from one to another. The work in this exhibition includes paintings encased by shutters and doors, calling to mind windows connecting the inside and the outside. The exhibit also includes recent monotypes, single prints taken from a design created in oil paint and printing ink on glass, which Kadish made in New York with Master Printer Lisa Mackie.

“I’ve always been fascinated by views through gateways and windows connecting the inside and the outside, said Kadish in her artist statement. “In all of these recent paintings and monotypes, the aim is to suggest space beyond the confines of the canvas or the borders of the monotype in addition to evoking seasons, time of the day, wind and weather and sometimes the movement of water. The intention is to feel immersed in color, light and currents of water and air in nature.”

“Presenting this exhibition showcasing the newest work of this internationally-acclaimed artist is a true honor for DVAC,” said Eva Buttacavoli, DVAC Executive Director. “Kadish has the unique ability to blend both color and pattern into harmonious, poetic visual statements and these new works exemplify this talent in a profound way. There is a reflective, contemplative quality about this work that resonates with the viewer, evoking memories of time, place and presence.”

Kadish has exhibited her work since 1973 and splits her time working and living in Yellow Springs, Ohio and New York City. She has held residencies at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY; Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA; Ragdale in Lake Forest, IL, and Tyrone Guthrie Center for the Arts in Ireland. She has a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and an MA in Art History from the University of Chicago. She also attended the London College of Printing in London, England.

The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, November 19th at 3:00 p.m. A Gallery Talk by the artist will take place at 3:15 p.m. and will be followed by a light reception that is free and open to the public.
